War-Damaged Schoolhouse in Korea

War-Damaged Schoolhouse in Korea

View of a bombed-out school in Korea, one of the many destroyed during the fighting in that country. Despite the damage, classes are still held here, either under damaged sections of the structure or in the open air outside, weather permitting.
So smashed up were school buildings in Korea that classes had to be held not only in the open air and the remains of bombed-out buildings but also in abandoned streetcars. About 64% of all classrooms were destroyed or badly damaged and 80% of the educational equipment was lost. The United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government are working jointly on a vast rehabilitation program to restore and improve educational facilities.
