Logs for Korea

The present backlog of houses in the Republic of Korea required to replace those destroyed during the fighting, to care for refugees from North Korea, and to meet the normal increase in population, now approximates 1,000,000 units. The United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), in conjunction with the ROK Ministry of Social Affairs, has initiated a project designed to develop a sound and practical long-range national housing program.
This photograph shows UNKRA-imported logs being unloaded from barges at the Akasaki docks in Pusan. Lumber is very scarce in Korea, though there are several saw-mills. Logs imported by UNKRA from Canada and the Philippines will be of great help in the reconstruction program and will also provide encouragement for the local saw-mills. [No exact date]
