Encouraging Korean Coastal Fishing Industry
Although Korean distant-water fishing has made great gains in recent years, the majority of Korean fishermen still operate in waters relatively close to the peninsula with old vessels and antiquated fishing methods. The Korean Five-Year Fisheries Development Plan will replace outdated facilities with modern ones, but its success will depend on whether the industry can be provided with sufficient navigators, master fishermen and marine engineers to operate them. Therefore, the Government is being assisted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as executing agency, in establishing a new Coastal Fishing Training Centre to meet these manpower needs. Center trainees practice fishing on this purse seiner, which is shown as its net is hauled in.
