Land from the Sea

Land from the Sea

Korea is getting a new coastline as a result of a land reclamation scheme that aims at converting some 50 bays on the west coast into rich rice lands within the next ten years. Sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture and assisted by the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency (UNKRA), which supplied the necessary steel, cement and dynamite, one of the first projects is well under way at Tae Chon, where almost 1,600 acres of tide lands has been cut off from the Yellow Sea by a strong, six-kilometer long, dyke and is in process of being cleared for cultivation.
Shown here from the newly completed dyke is part of the trestle of a narrow gauge railway built the fill and rocks needed to build the dyke.
