Deep Sea Fishing Training Centre in Pusan, Korea

The Korean fishing industry consists of relatively small-scale operations on fishing grounds close to the coast. Recent developments, however, indicate that Korea might become an important offshore fishing country within the next ten years. One of the factors seriously hampering rapid expansion of new fisheries is the lack of qualified technicians, particularly master-fishermen. To provide skilled personnel, the Republic of Korea, with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as Executing Agency, established the Deep Sea Fishing Training Centre in Pusan. The Centre is the core of the fishing training system in Korea and now has 250 students in training each year. Intensive practical instruction is given aboard training vessels and ashore, with the emphasis on fishing techniques, although courses on navigation and marine engines are also given.
