Agreement on Settlement of Situation Relating to Afghanistan Signed at United Nations Office in Geneva

United Nations efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive political settlement of the situation relating to Afghanistan culminated on 14 April 1988 with the signing of four instruments by the Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, Abdul Wakil; Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, Zain Noorani; Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union, Edouard Shevardnadze; and the Secretary of State of the United States, George Shultz. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar presided over the signing ceremony. He was accompanied by Diego Cordovez, Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs and Personal Representative of the Secretary-General.
