3rd Committee Adopts Draft Convention on Suppression and Punishment of Crime of Apartheid

The Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) this afternoon approved an amended text of a draft convention on the suppression and punishment of the crime of apartheid. It also adopted a draft resolution in which all States would be called on to sign and ratify the convention as soon as possible. The final vote on the draft convention, as amended in the course of a series of votes on each paragraph of the preamble and on each article, was 93 votes in favour to 1 against (Portugal), with 24 abstentions.
