United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) Supervises Cease-Fire and Withdrawal of Troops to Recognized Borders

The United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) was set up by the Security Council on 9 August to "verify, confirm and supervise" the Iran-Iraq cease-fire and the withdrawal of troops to the internationally recognized boundaries. It is an unarmed military observer group under United Nations command and will operate for a period of six months unless the Council decides otherwise. The Group consists of up to 350 military observers with Group headquarters in both Baghdad and Teheran. The cease-fire officially takes effect at 3 a.m. Greenwich Meantime on 20 August.
