Haitians Celebrate Their First Democratic Election
On 16 December 1990, for the first time in their history, the people of Haiti chose a president by means of a peaceful, democratic election. Assisting them in that process was the United Nations Observer Group for the Verification of Elections in Haiti (ONUVEH), drawing on experience with the Namibian elections earlier in the year, and with the added innovation of UN Security observers.
