UN Force in the Congo (ONUC)

1 August 1960

Following the Security Council resolution of 14 July 1960 authorizing UN military assistance to the Republic of the Congo, soldiers from a number of nations have been sent to help restore order and calm in the country.
Ralph J. Bunche, the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, is seen here (centre) during a dinner party given by Dr. M. Candau, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), while the latter was in the Congo to discuss health needs.
