New Textile Mill to Benefit Nicaraguan Cotton Industry

New Textile Mill to Benefit Nicaraguan Cotton Industry

In order to supply a major part of the fine quality cotton and polyester blend fabrics now imported in Central America, a new $9.2 million textile mill, Fabritex, has been established here by Nicaraguan, Colombian, and Central American Common Market organizations. At full capacity the mill uses some 1800 tons of Nicaraguan cotton a year, employs over 400 skilled and semi-skilled workers, with full dyeing and finishing facilities for all of its output. It is capable of producing approximately 10.2 million yards of fabric per year, and it is expected to export 40% of its products within the Central American Common Market area. This project was completed with assistance from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), an affiliate of the World Bank.
