UN Emergency Force in the Sinai Peninsula

UN Emergency Force in the Sinai Peninsula

Ever since mid-December, when the Israeli forces started their withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula, units of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) have been advancing behind than to occupy the positions just abandoned and help maintain order. As of 8 Jan, four UNEF contingents were deployed in as many areas of the peninsula: a Yugoslav unit was progressing on the northern road, from El Kantara towards E1. Arish; a Colombian unit was following the central road, between Ismailia and El Auja; a Danish-Norwegian battalion was deployed on the Suez-Elath road; and finally, an Indian battalion was advancing along the Suez road, which runs to El Tur.
