United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) - Peacekeepers Watch over Borders and Boundaries
Established in 1948 to supervise the truce called for by the Security Council during the first Arab-Israeli war, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) continues to play a mediating role in the Middle East. Its 300 observers, headquartered in Jerusalem, liaise with Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic, monitoring cease-fire arrangements, facilitating communication between the hostile parties and working to diffuse conflicts and prevent escalation of violence. They have also assisted the various other peacekeeping operations launched in the region.
