Dr. Charles Malik Elected President of the 13th General Assembly
By majority vote on the first ballot, the United Nations General Assembly today elected Dr. Charles Malik, Lebanon's Minister for Foreign Affairs, as President of its thirteenth session.
Just after the election of the new President, Sir Leslie Munro (extreme right, on rostrum), who as President of the last regular session called the meeting to order, is shaking hands with Mr. Malik. UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld and Mr. Andrew W. Cordier, Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General, are also on the rostrum (left to right, backs to camera). In the background is Mr. Jehan de Noue, Chief of Protocol, who had escorted Mr. Malik up to the rostrum.
