Field Coverage
Salvage Work in the Suez Canal
Salvage work in the Suez Canal is proceeding at a normal rate. A temporary channel for the transit of ships up to 10,000 tons should be opened early in March, and the Canal should be cleared of all its obstructions in May, as anticipated by General Wheeler (US), who organized and supervises the clearance operation for the UN.
This picture, taken on 10 Jan., shows the UN salvage vessels working on the wreck of the sunken Egyptian landing craft ""Akka"", which went down with a cargo of cement and is considered one of the most serious obstacles facing the UN fleet in the Suez Canal.
