MINUSMA Patrols Konna Market in Mali
On the morning of 20 December residents of the Mopti region convened in the town of Konna, located in the centre of Mali on the Niger river, at one of the country's largest open-air port markets. The market reopened in late 2013 following violence that forced civilians to flee and devastated the local economy. Since then, regular joint foot patrols and market walks have been conducted by United Nations Police (UNPOL) and Malian Security Forces, helping to build confidence among local community members and contributing to a durable peace in the area, regarded as the new epicenter of Mali's six-year conflict.
Wearing distinctive uniforms, peacekeepers from the Togolese Formed Police Unit (FPU) patrol the market.
