Anglo-French Forces Complete Evacuation of Port Said
Anglo-French forces completed their evacuation of the Port Said area today and the city was left under the control of the U.N. Emergency Force (UNEF), which is jointly protecting it in cooperation with the Egyptian police. Signs of the evacuation became clear during the afternoon. British troops came on foot from positions they had been occupying in the city and boarded ships and landing craft, while two British tanks guarded the embarkation point. At 4 p.m., the first large vessel, a French Hospital ship, was seen to leave; after that, ship after ship finished loading and left. At 5:35 the tanks left their positions and boarded a landing craft, and one hour later the last ship sailed out of the harbor, marking the end of a 48-day occupation.
