Operation Lifeline Helps Displaced People in Southern Sudan

About 2.5 million people face famine in Sudan. The people displaced by the war in Southern Sudan are being helped by Operation Lifeline Sudan, a consortium of the World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and 35 non-governmental organizations. The nine year relief effort has saved thousands of lives and the World Food Programme says it will need $154 million to provide emergency aid until April 1999.
Raphaelle Honnorat, a nurse working for Doctors Without Borders, a non-governmental organization based in Belgium, checks the registration cards to issue one week's supply of cereals for children and sorghum for the family.
