First Session of New UN Economic Commission for Africa Opens

29 December 1958

The first session of the new UN Regional Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) was opened in the parliament building in Addis Ababa today by Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. The Commission, the fourth of its kind to be set up by the United Nations, will provide a focal point where the economic needs of the African people can be expressed and where action to meet them can be initiated and stimulated.
