The Peace Bell, near the Secretariat Building, was a gift donated by the UN Association of Japan in the name of the people of Japan. It was cast in the Tada factory of Japan from coins received from the delegates of 60 nations at a general conference of UN Associations held in Paris in 1951, and from individual contributions of various kinds of metal. The bell weighs 256 pounds. It is housed in a typically Japanese structure like a Shinto shrine, made of cypress wood.
