Afghan Refugees: Iran
The Torbat-e-Jam refugee camp, located in Khorasan Province, about 150 kilometers from Mashhad and 70 kilometers from the Afghan border, holds about 7,800 Afghan refugees, mostly Hazaras, a Shi'ite Afghan minority from Hazarajat Province, but also found in Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, and other parts of central and western Afghanistan. Hazaras had been targeted by the once ruling Taliban militia.
Torbat-e-Jam is a large compound, enclosed by a fence and watchtowers, but with plenty of open space within the camp. Although the front gate is guarded by Iranian soldiers, refugees are free to come and go with the authorities' permission.
