Statue of Poseidon at United Nations Headquarters

Statue of Poseidon at United Nations Headquarters

This statue of Poseidon, which is seven feet high, is a gift of the Greek Government to the United Nations; it is a replica of the original which is in Athens. The replica in the General Assembly Lobby was presented to the United Nations in 1953. Until recently it was assumed that the original statue was of the god Zeus. The Greek Government has now informed the United Nations that further archaeological research has established that the figure represents "Poseidon of Artemision".
