New Library Building at United Nations Headquarters

Designed by the firm of Harrison, Abramowitz and Harris, architectural consultants to the United Nations, the new Library building is constructed in white marble, glass and aluminum. It has six stores and a penthouse, three of the floors lying above ground and three below. In its overall dimensions it is 219ft. in length and 83 ft. wide. Among the special features in the new building are a 200-seat auditorium, shaped like a Greek amphitheater and equipped with cinemascope screen, footlights and mechanism for sound and for simultaneous interpretation; a Periodical Reading Room, a microfilm reading-room, an audio room containing tape recorders and turntables for language studies, and a Penthouse Lounge to be used for official entertaining.
