General Assembly Recognizes People's Republic of China

The General Assembly voted tonight to recognize the representatives of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations, and ""to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations affiliated to it"".
Delegates applauding after the draft resolution, sponsored by Albania and 22 other nations, was adopted. The empty seats of the Chinese delegation, which had left before the vote, can be seen in the background.
