United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was set up in March 1978, following the Israeli invasion of Southern Lebanon, to ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces and to help the Lebanese Government restore its authority in the region. Headquartered in Naqoura, UNIFIL's 5,800 troops remained in the area after Israel invaded again in 1982, striving to limit the violence and to provide humanitarian support for civilians. The force has been unable to complete its mandated deployment, because Israel has maintained a security zone north of its border with Lebanon.
