Flags of the 16 New U.N. Member Nations Fly at Headquarters

A brief ceremony took place this afternoon at U.N. Headquarters, in New York, on the occasion of the first raising of the flags of the sixteen new Member States of the United Nations. The flags were raised one at a time.
A U.N. guard is raising the Spanish flag (at bottom, left) as U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöl and Mr. de Abaroa, Representative of Spain, look on. The flags of the other new U.N. Member Nations already fly at right. Representatives from each country and U.N. Guards stand at the foot of the flagpoles.
