Cornerstone for Peace

Cornerstone Laying Ceremony. Cornerstone is dedicated by Secretary-General Trygve Lie, left. Deposited in the stone are copies of the United Nations Charter and of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the background is the marble façade of the new building for, in this era of steel-frame construction, the age-old ceremony of corner-stone laying often takes place when the actual building rises many feet above the ground.
