United Nations Force in the Congo

5 August 1960

Following the Security Council resolution of 14 July 1960 authorizing UN military assistance to the Republic of the Congo, some 11,500 soldiers from nine countries are now on duty helping to restore order and calm in the country. The Secretary-General sent his Personal Representative in the Congo, Ralph J. Bunche, to Elisabethville today for talks prior to the arrival of UN troops in the Katanga Province.

Today the UN plane with technicians aboard was refused permission to land except for refueling. Ralph J. Bunche is seen here (front row, left) at the airport talking with Mr. Monongo, Minister of the Interior of Katanga Province, prior to returning to Leopoldville, with the technicians.
