Security Council Meets on Timor-Leste

The Security Council could take satisfaction from its contribution to the progress in Timor-Leste, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for that country, Kamalesh Sharma, told the Council this afternoon. Briefing on the Secretary-General's report on the situation in Timor-Leste - which recommended extension of the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) until 20 May 2004 - he said the Council would have to look at the optimal form for association of the United Nations with Timor-Leste after the mission was over. The engagement of the international community in peace-building and institution-building would need to continue.
