General Assembly's 23rd Special Session Looks towards Future

Secretary-General Kofi Annan (left) greets Hillary Rodham Clinton, First Lady of the United States, at Headquarters to participate in the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly. Meeting on the theme, ""Women 2000: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the Twenty-first Century"", the session brings together some 10,000 delegates from governments and non-governmental organizations to review progress made on gender issues since the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women. It is therefore also known as ""Beijing +5"", after the site of the 1995 Conference.
