Medal Parade for Bangladeshi Engineers Serving with UNMISS
Engineers from Bangladesh serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded the UN Medal for their service during a ceremony in Juba. The 260-person engineering contingent were the first to be deployed as part of the Regional Protection Force mandated by the UN Security Council. In the past year they have carried out a number of major reconstruction projects, rehabilitating roads, building bases, servicing water points and even repairing football grounds for young sports fans in Juba. During the ceremony David Shearer, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan and Head of UNMISS, acknowledged their professionalism, integrity and dedication to duty. The contingent also paid respects to fallen peacekeeper Lieutenant Commander Ashraf Siddiqui who was killed by armed gunmen while accompanying a humanitarian convoy in June.
