Secretary-General Visits Rehabilitation Centre in Iraq

Secretary-General António Guterres (centre) briefs reporters after meeting with camp residents at the Jeddah Rehabilitation Centre, in the Ninewa Governorate, Iraq.

"I end my visit deeply impressed by the resilience of the people I met. [...] ...the government of Iraq is committed to make Iraqis come back here and to be reintegrated and rehabilitated for the future of the communities and for the future of the country. May the Iraq example be followed everywhere else," said the Secretary-General.

The Secretary-General is visiting Iraq to underscore the UN's commitment to support Iraq in the consolidation of its democratic institutions and advancing peace, sustainable development and human rights for all Iraqis. The Secretary-General called for inclusive dialogue and praised the Government's ambitious and forward-looking reform agenda as well as its efforts to allow the Iraqis outside the country to return. The Secretary-General met with government officials in Baghdad as well as with Kurdistan Regional Government officials in Erbil. He also met with youth and women's rights groups, and visited the National Museum of Iraq and a Rehabilitation Centre for internally displaced people (IDP's).
