Secretary-General Visits Iraq

Secretary-General António Guterres visits the headquarters of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in Baghdad and meets with peacekeepers from the Republic of Fiji serving with UNAMI.

The Secretary-General is in Iraq to underscore the UN's commitment to support Iraq in the consolidation of its democratic institutions and advancing peace, sustainable development and human rights for all Iraqis. The Secretary-General called for inclusive dialogue and praised the Government's ambitious and forward-looking reform agenda as well as its efforts to allow the Iraqis outside the country to return. The Secretary-General met with government officials in Baghdad as well as with Kurdistan Regional Government officials in Erbil. He also met with youth and women's rights groups, and visited the National Museum of Iraq and a Rehabilitation Centre for internally displaced people (IDP's).
