First Session of the General Assembly
The first session of the United Nations General Assembly consisted of two consecutive meetings held in two different locations. The first meeting convened on 10 January 1946 at the Methodist Central Hall in London, England. The second meeting convened in Flushing Meadows, New York on 23 October 1946.
Delegates representing 51 nations attended the first session of the General Assembly, wherein the scope and purpose of the United Nations was defined. Paul-Henri Spaak of Belgium was elected President of the first session of the General Assembly, defeating Trygve Lie, who was subsequently appointed as the first Secretary-General of the United Nations.
