On the sidelines of the “Ascent” Climate Change Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Nations (UN)Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited SHAMS 1, one of the largest solar power plants in the world, with capacity of 100 megawatts, enough to power 20 000 homes.
The SHAMS 1 was commissioned in March 2013 and it is to be followed by SHAMS 2 and SHAMS 3. The power plant displaces 175,000 tons of CO2 per year which is equivalent to planting 1.5 million trees or taking approximately 15,000 cars off the road. It consists of 258,048 parabolic trough mirrors, covering approximately 2.5 square kilometers.
The "Ascent" is the first international meeting to draw on the conclusions of the recently issued reports from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which found the consequences of climate change are already being felt, and that while present action is insufficient, there are still pathways towards a low carbon future that could minimize the phenomenon's impacts.
