Storyline

United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres met with government ministers from the five major host countries for Syrian refugees on Sunday (4 May) at Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan.

Guterres first visited the city of Mafraq to highlight the impact the Syrian crisis is having on the region.

Accompanying him were the ministers of the five countries that have taken the biggest share of Syrian refugees – Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt. Currently these countries are host to around three million registered and unregistered Syrian refugees.

These host countries provide safety, but also education and some health care.

In total, more than 120,000 Syrian pupils are currently enrolled in Jordan’s schools, and each term thousands more Syrian pupils are being enrolled.

Guterres and the ministers travelled to a local hospital.

SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees:
“It is a must for the international community to give massive support to Jordan and to Lebanon and to the other countries in order to allow them to cope with these challenges. This hospital has as many Syrians as Jordanians.”

In the last two years, more than 3,000 babies have been born to mothers living in the Za’atri Refugee Camp. For difficult cases, women are brought to the hospital’s maternity ward.

At the hospital, the High Commissioner and the ministers met some of the newest arrivals – Syrian children born in exile.

The massive influx of displaced Syrians has put a huge strain on the resources and infrastructure of these countries. In many host communities, public services such as education, health, water and sanitation have been stretched to breaking point.

At the Za’atri refugee camp, Guterres and the ministers held a meeting to discuss the impact of the Syrian crisis on the main host countries.

They warned that the influx of refugees from Syria was stretching public services in many of the host communities to breaking point.

SOUNDBITE (English) Nasser Judeh, Jordanian Minister for Foreign Affairs:
“The humanitarian spill over of the crisis in Syria has resulted in severe burdens for the countries sitting around this table.”

Guterres also underlined the pressing need to implement a recent UN Security Council resolution. Unrestricted humanitarian access for all Syrians in need of help is a must. Together with the ministers, he called on the international community to significantly increase its financial and humanitarian support to address the human impact of the Syria crisis.

SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees:
“Nobody can argue that there is not now an international recognition that there needs to be an international solidarity with host countries and local communities in order to support the gigantic effort they are making due to the structural changes that the presence of so many refugees are causing in their countries.”

The delegation called on the international community to massively increase financial and humanitarian assistance to help the countries cope.

To date, only 25 percent of the financial assistance requested from donor countries for this year has materialised.
