“The United Nations Children’s Fund and the World Health Organization do appreciate commitment from the United States government to stop making operational use from immunization campaigns. Each year, immunization saves two to three million lives and it’s an essential public health tool. So, humanitarian workers and humanitarian programs should never be used by any government, by any entity for military or intelligence purposes. They are there to save lives, and that’s the beginning and the end of it.”

Storyline

The United Nation's Chidren's Fund(UNICEF) said that it "appreciated" the commitment from the United States (US) government to stop using immunization campaigns as a cover for intelligence gathering.

UNICEF spokesperson Sarah Crowe said today (21 May) that, “humanitarian workers and programs should never be used for military or intelligence purposes."

Each year, she said, immunization saves two to three million lives and "it’s an essential public health tool" adding "they are there to save lives, and that’s the beginning and the end of it.”

The US government vouched never again to let CIA use false vaccination programs in order to gather intelligence, as it did in Pakistan in 2011 ahead of the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.

The move came after pressure on the White House administration from several public health programs, after the organization “Save the Children” had to withdraw its foreign staff from Pakistan in a midst of the polio vaccination campaign.
