Storyline

The grounds of Mahat School in Juba, capital of South Sudan are now home to nearly 2,400 people, displaced by the conflict that has gripped the South Sudan since last December.

22-year-old Monica Apiar Tiir and her four children arrived a month ago. They walked most of the 650 kilometres from their home.

With the onset of the rainy season, many tents and makeshift shelters are leaking. Monica and the other women scoop water out of the tent to try keep the ground dry. This same ground where they will sleep.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Monica Apiar Tiir , mother of four:
“We need help with food and a place to stay. We cannot cook because of the rains; we cannot light fire because it is so wet. I can’t feed my children. That is our most urgent need.”

The UNHCR estimate that there are 923 000 South Sudanese displaced within their own country. They are spread over 174 sites, both organized and spontaneous.

Humanitarians have difficulties accessing those who found the shelter outside the UN bases or protected civilian areas.

Kennedy Sargo is a UNHCR Protection Offficer working with the local community here.

SOUNDBITE (English) Kennedy Sargo, UNHCR Protection Officer:
“We have now provided some non-food items for the families that recently arrived, however, since they came like three to four weeks ago, they have not been able to be provided food so UNHCR is advocating for other actors particularly WFP to come in to try to help those who have not been served.”

When she arrived, Monica had to wait for weeks to get assistance.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Monica Apiar Tiir , Displaced Person:
“The mats will make sleeping easier and the plastic sheeting will help keep out the rains but the only challenge will be on the sides because we only have enough sheets for the roof but that’s not a big problem. I am happy.”

In addition to displaced people, there are more than 293,000 South Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries since last December. Some 4.9 million people need humanitarian assistance.
