7. SOUNDBITE (English) Emmanuel Jal, South Sudanese Musician and Former Child Soldier:
“You know, if we can go to the moon, and we can go the sea, and invent so many good things, poverty is not difficult to eradicate. Eradication for everybody is not impossible to do. The thing is getting people to do it. Are people really willing to do it? Because we have enough money to fund wars, but we don’t have enough to actually dedicate ourselves for peace and ending of poverty.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jocelyne Béroard, Lead Singer of the Martinican Ban Kassav’:
“War is always, you know, is still all around and war carries poverty most of the time. And, you know, the ideas about religion, I am not very comfortable with the language but I hope that you understand what I want to say, is that we are aware of that, can I say that? We understand that when people have got guns, our weapon is music.”

Storyline

A spectacular line up of global artists will hit the stage Friday night at UN Headquarters in New York for an international musical event hosted by the President of the General Assembly, John W. Ashe.

Through the power of music, poetry and video, performers will point the spotlight on the historical opportunity that will arise in 2015 when world leaders will make decisive commitments to set our planet on a prosperous and sustainable path.

During rehearsals, earlier in the day, Trinidadian soca star Machel Montano said he was “optimistic” about the outcome of negotiations and once a plan is in place. It will be a “call to action.”

The event will feature several performers from the Caribbean, President Ashe’s home region, including soca artists like Montano and the iconic zouk band Kassav’.

Former South Sudanese child soldier turned Hip Hop artist and activist, Emmanuel Jal, said “if we can go to the moon, and we can go the sea, and invent so many good things, poverty is not difficult to eradicate.”

Jal said the question was, “are people really willing to do it? Because we have enough money to fund wars, but we don’t have enough to actually dedicate ourselves for peace and ending of poverty.”

At an earlier press conference presenting the event, Kassav’s lead singer Jocelyne Béroard highlighted the role of artists and musicians in ending poverty. She said “war carries poverty most of the time” but “when people have got guns, our weapon is music.”

The artists will join their voices and talents to draw public attention to the critical decisions global leaders will make in 2015, when they adopt a new set of goals to focus development efforts and resources for 2015 and beyond. From clean water and sanitation to education, from gender equality to employment, these priorities will seek to shape a sustainable future by improving economic and social conditions for all, while preserving our environment.
