Uganda’s foreign minister Sam Kutesa was elected today (11 June) by acclamation to become the 69th president of the General Assembly.
Kutesa, accepting the post, told the general assembly that the world “continues to be confronted with different challenges of global reach and impact” including “poverty and hunger, underdeveloped education and health services, unemployment, poor and inadequate infrastructure in many developing countries, insufficient and expensive energy, climate change and rising sea levels, armed conflict and emerging threats to peace and security such as transnational organized crime terrorism, piracy and human trafficking.”
His chosen theme for the GA’s 69th session will be “Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda.”
The Ugandan diplomat said that “as we work on a post 2015 development agenda we must ensure that the sustainable development goals being formulated build on the foundation laid by the MDGs.”
He said it was also essential “that we develop an agenda that is transformative, with the eradication of poverty and hunger, and promotion of sustained and inclusive economic growth as its overarching objectives.”
Outside the GA, Kutesa was questioned by reporters about his country’s controversial laws on homosexuality as well as about allegations of corruption.
He said that “there are guarantees now being handed out to guide the application” of the anti-homosexuality laws.
He also said he had “just issued a statement suspending my interests in all my businesses” and accused members of the Ugandan opposition of a conspiracy “to malign my name.”
Kutesa said “I have never been corrupt; I am not homophobic; and I believe that I am a sweet person to lead this organization for the next session.”
In February, the African nation passed a new law punishing gay sex with life in prison.
