“All over the world, ports like Hamburg are the planet’s pumping hearts, bringing life to billions. In the midst of all this activity are the people who work on the ships – approximately 1.5 million seafarers, who face hardship and danger every day to keep our global economy afloat. They live a tough life, working long hours in all weathers, living in confined conditions with limited opportunities for social interaction or relaxation. The work is hard and the level of responsibility is high.

Wednesday 25 June is the "Day of the Seafarer" aimed at recognizing the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal cost to themselves and their families.
IMO’s chief Koji Sekimizu said that some 1.5 million seafarers around the world “face hardship and danger” on daily basis while keeping our global economy afloat.
In 2010, the Diplomatic Conference which met in Manila to adopt milestone revisions to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers and its associated Code, also agreed that the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.
The day on which the amendments were formally adopted, 25 June, was chosen for the International Day of the Seafarer.
