“The European Union welcomes the approval of the appointment by the UN General Assembly of His Royal Highness Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan as the next High Commissioner for Human Rights following the proposal made by the Secretary-General. We are convinced that Prince Zeid proven track record in the promotion and protection of Human Rights, the fight against impunity, as well as his exceptionally diplomatic experience will be an invaluable asset to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It is therefore with our greatest respect and support that we acknowledge the appointment of Prince Zeid as the new High Commissioner for Human Rights. The European Union –Mr. President- is a strong supporter of the Office of the High Commissioner –its independence and integrity- as well as the Human Rights Council.”

Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al Hussein today (16 June) was officially appointed by the 193-Nation UN General Assembly to become the next United Nations human rights chief to replace Navi Pillay in Geneva.
Prince Zeid, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Cambridge University, has previously served as Jordan's ambassador to the United States and Mexico. He was also a political affairs officer in UNPROFOR, the UN peacekeeping mission in the former Yugoslavia during the Balkan conflict.
Speaking to the members of the General Assembly, the Head of Delegations of the European Union to the United Nations Thomas Mayr-Harting said “the European Union welcomes the approval of the appointment by the UN General Assembly of His Royal Highness Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan as the next High Commissioner for Human Rights following the proposal made by the Secretary-General.”
He added “we are convinced that Prince Zeid proven track record in the promotion and protection of Human Rights, the fight against impunity, as well as his exceptionally diplomatic experience will be an invaluable asset to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.”
Mayr-Harting also said “it is therefore with our greatest respect and support that we acknowledge the appointment of Prince Zeid as the new High Commissioner for Human Rights”, adding that the European Union is a strong supporter of the Office of the High Commissioner and the Human Rights Council.

The Jordanian diplomat who will replace Prince Zeid as Amman's UN ambassador is Dina Kawar, who will become the sixth female to head a delegation on the UN Security Council. Jordan will be on the 15-nation council through the end of 2015.
