Storyline

United Nations(UN)head of peacekeeping Herve Ladsous and director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yury Fedotov are visiting Mali in a bid to step up efforts to fight organized crime in the country.

Ladsous arrived Wednesday (9 July)and has held meetings with the country's authorities and mission personel.

He said the meetings provided an opportunity to discuss the implementation of the Security Council’s renewed mandate for the UN Mission (MINUSMA) which was extended through 30 June 2015.

Among its specific tasks, the Council urged the mission to expand its presence in the north of Mali beyond key populations centres, notably in areas where civilians are at risk.

He reassured Mali's prime minister Moussa Mara that his country has the UN’s full support.

In Bamako, Fedotov told journalists that the UN Office on Drugs and Crime has dispatched an expert to Mali who was “very qualified in organized crime and war against drugs and terrorism” and will soon reinforce its presence in the country.

He underlined that he believes the UNODC “could do much more” with determination and political support from both the Malian government and the international community.
