3. SOUNDBITE (French) Fadéla Chaib, Spokesperson WHO:
“The situation is still varied. The epidemic seems to be showing minimal activity in Guinea where we've recorded only one new case in the last seven days, but at the same time it is vital that we remain vigilant and observe the situation in the villages and the communities where there is particular resistance to cooperation with health experts. In Liberia and Sierra Leone, the situation remains precarious, with new figures, new cases of infections and also deaths. We have now identified the hot spots or the places where there is really intensive Ebola activity, for example in Kailahun and Kenema in Sierra Leone and Lofa and Montserrado in Liberia.”

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Fadéla Chaib, Spokesperson WHO :
“As of the 8th of July, we were at 888 cases and 539 deaths in the three countries. In two days from the 6th to the 8th, we recorded 44 new cases of Ebola and 21 deaths in the three countries”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Fadéla Chaib, Spokesperson WHO:
“For the time being we have only Ebola in 3 countries. Of course when you have an outbreak there are always suspected cases in other countries. The recent one was a suspected case in Ghana that turned out not to be Ebola, so we have from time to time suspected cases in the neighbouring countries that are rapidly checked by laboratories and turned out not to be Ebola.”

Storyline

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the deadly Ebola virus has killed at least 539 people since the outbreak began in February.

New cases are being reported in in Sierra Leone and Liberia, with 19 deaths over three days this week. Only one new case was confirmed in Guinea, where the WHO said the community transmission rate was low
.
Speaking to journalists in Geneva today (11 July) WHO spokesperson Fadéla Chaib said “the epidemic trend in Liberia and Sierra Leone remains precarious with high numbers of new cases and deaths being reported.”

The cases in Sierra Leone are centered in Kailahun and Kenema districts, and in Liberia's Lofa and Montserrado counties.

As part of the effort to control this outbreak, the Assistant Director General for WHO’s Health Security and Environment cluster Dr. Keiji Fukuda, and the Sub-regional Coordinator for the outbreak response Dr Benido Impouma, visited Sierra Leone and Guinea from 7–10 July 2014.

The WHO’s delegation engaged and had dialogue with high-level political and Government authorities aimed to enhance national leadership and commitment. The delegation also held discussions with the national coordination structures for EVD outbreak response, including partners, in order to strengthen coordination, communication, and inter-sectoral collaboration.

A Sub-regional Outbreak Coordination Centre for the response is being established in Conakry, Guinea. The centre will act as a control and coordination platform to consolidate and harmonize the technical support to West African countries and to assist in resource mobilization.

Ebola spreads through contact with an infected person's bodily fluids and there is no vaccine or cure. It kills up to 90% of those infected but if patients receive early treatment, they have a better chance of survival.
