Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with Haitian president Michel Martelly yesterday (14 Jul) to discuss upcoming legislative and municipal elections, the ongoing cholera epidemic, as well as the restructuring of the United Nations mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Secretary-General said he is encouraged by president Martelly’s “strong commitment to the electoral system” by having legislative elections in October this year.
But Ban said he is also concerned with “disagreement between the executive and legislative branches”.
He is however confident that under Martelly’s leadership the “elections will be conducted in an inclusive, credible and democratic way.”
President Martelly saluted Ban’s statement that “MINUSTAH has a moral responsibility to help Haiti in the fight to eliminate cholera” and have confirmed that this is already the case, since a mixed commission has been formed under the leadership of Haitian health minister and UN chief in Haiti, Sandra Honore.
Wrapping up the press conference, the Secretary-General cautioned that “Haiti still needs the assistance of the international community” in area of development and stabilization.
Earlier the same day, Ban has launched, with Haitian prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, a "Total Sanitation Campaign" which aims to scale up sanitation and hygiene interventions in rural areas.
He called the campaign "a development milestone" for the country where half the population lacks access to adequate sanitation systems. "The need for this step is clear."
Supported by the UN, the campaign aims to raise sanitation standards and improve health conditions at the modes cost of only $4 per person.
After the meeting with the president Martelly at the National Palace, the Secretary General, the Haitian president and the prime minister had meet with key representatives of the Haitian civil society at the Hotel Royal Oasis in Port au Prince.
