Storyline

Wrapping his two-day visit to Haiti, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held a press conference in capital Port-au-Prince, after touring the national Olympic sport center still under construction since 2012.

At the press conference, Secretary-General briefed about his encounters with various political leaders as well as judges, policemen and representatives of civil society.

These encounters have given him a “strong sense of the significant progress that Haiti has achieved in the last 10 years” while being supported by MINUSTAH and in “overcoming one of the history’s most devastating earthquakes.”

Talking about legislative and local elections planned for October this year, Ban said he is “especially concerned that Haiti’s political transition could suffer a regression.”

He said the elections are “essential” for the continuity of parliament in 2015, as well as for the “consolidation of democracy and the rule of law.”

Secretary-General warned that he will have little to report on progress of these “long-overdue elections” to the Security Council upon his return to New York.

Earlier today, the Secretary-General visited the national Olympic center, still under construction.

After the earthquake of January 12, 2010, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has pledged to give Haiti a National Olympic Center, and construction had started on 14 February 2012.

Once completed, the center will include a total of three football fields, one of which will have a track for the practice of athletics. Courts for basketball and volleyball, gymnasium for martial arts, tennis court and other.

The construction of this center, to be funded largely by the IOC, will cost about U.S. $ 29 million.
