Storyline

As the number of killed and injured civilians rises in the Gaza Strip, aid agencies are coordinating an emergency response and are airlifting relief supplies from Dubai, United Arab Emirates into Jordan, from where the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is transporting and distributing to the thousands of vulnerable displaced families in Gaza.

The first cargo took off from the Royal Wing Airfield in Dubai on late on Sunday night 20 July when a United Arab Emirates Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet carried 115 metric tons of aid, including 45,000 mattresses, 10,000 blankets and 220 hygiene kits to the Marka’a International Airport north of Amman in Jordan.

The Dubai-based charity International Humanitarian City (IHC) had coordinated participation of crucial organizations, including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Humanitarian Response Depot, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC,) as well as the Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates.

The first relief items included jerry cans, sleeping mats, blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene kits and kitchen sets. They were dispatched from IHC warehouses, as well as from some of the largest global stockpiles for aid agencies, including UNHCR, WFP and IFRC, and then transferred to the royal aircraft in the Dubai Air Wing airfield.

On the evening of 22 July two United Arab Emirates Hercules cargo aircrafts arrived at Marka’a International Airport north of Amman, carrying 10,050 blankets from the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO), as well as 3 tons of high energy biscuits from WFP.

The airlifts are scheduled to at least until 27 July.

UNRWA is using trucks to transport the aid into Gaza for distribution. The cargoes are transferred through the Allenby Border Crossing on the River Jordan and delivered into Gaza. The first convoy of 15 trucks arrived in Gaza on Wednesday 23 July.

UNRWA plans to expand the scope of aid to include emergency food parcels as stocks of food and other essential goods are fast dwindling down in Gaza.

The number of displaced sheltering in 77 UNRWA schools exceeds 117 000, as people continue to flee their homes under the relentless bombardment and in fear of continued ground incursions.

UNRWA has already had to revise its emergency flash appeal to US$ 115 million to respond to the dramatically increased humanitarian needs of the people of Gaza.
