“In the past hour or so, Israel has launched a ground offensive against Gaza. I regret that despite my urgings, and those of many others, an already dangerous conflict has now escalated even further. In the past 24 hours, there have been a number of incidents involving the deaths of civilians, including the appalling killing of four boys on a beach in Gaza City. I urge Israel to do far more to stop civilian casualties.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (17 July) formally introduced his Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, and his Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy to the press.

In his remarks, Ban said “together, we will spare no effort to help stop the violence and achieve a Syrian-led inclusive political solution that meets the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people.”

He stressed that “the full support of the parties and the international community, including especially a united Security Council, will be essential.”

De Mistura, who has served as the head of the UN missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, will take on the peace-facilitation role previously held by Lakhdar Brahimi, who resigned in May, and before that by Kofi Annan.

The Secretary-General also spoke about Israel’s launch of a ground offensive against Gaza today. He expressed regret “that despite my urgings, and those of many others, an already dangerous conflict has now escalated even further.”

He recalled that “in the past 24 hours, there have been a number of incidents involving the deaths of civilians, including the appalling killing of four boys on a beach in Gaza City” and urged Israel “to do far more to stop civilian casualties.”

With respect to the Malaysia Airlines disaster in Ukraine, Ban said he was “closely monitoring the reports” and called for “a full and transparent international investigation.”

For the moment, he said, he offered “condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.”
