The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, says that the shooting down of a Malaysia Airlines passenger plane in eastern Ukraine may constitute a war crime.
All 298 people on board the plane died on 17th July. Pillay has called for a prompt, independent, impartial investigation into what happened.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva, Gianni Magazzeni, Chief of the Americas, Europe and Central Asia Branch of the OHCHR, said “I think the High Commissioner has indicated that this may amount to a war crime. I think also the High Commissioner has said there’s a need for a prompt, independent, impartial and effective investigation.”
He also said “I think that that is what needs to be done to establish the facts and circumstances of what has happened and therefore there can be the next step, accountability for those who may be deemed to be the perpetrators of this crime.”
The call for an investigation comes on the day that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights released its latest report on the human rights situation in Ukraine.
The report says that a total breakdown of law and order and a reign of fear and terror have been inflicted by armed groups on the population of eastern Ukraine.
As of 26th July, at least 1,129 people have been killed and 3,442 wounded in the conflict in Ukraine.
