Storyline

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres visited Tombouctou in Mali, where he met with local authorities and members of civil society affected by the general insecurity in the northern region of the West African country.

Guterres called on the government and armed groups to return to dialogue and to allow refugees to return to Mali from Niger, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

On 1 September, the Malian government and representatives of the armed groups will meet in Algers to restart the peace negotiations recently suspended.

During his visit in Tombouktou, Guterres said “the Malians want to return to Mali and we have seen that there are still many difficulties.”

He also said that the UN Refugee Agency will work with the government, the Malian people, the UN System and the civil society to contribute to the process toward peace, security and prosperity that “the Malian people deserve.”

Hamadoun Konaté, Mali’s Minister for the Solidarity and Reconstruction of the North, said “we will implement a coordinated humanitarian intervention. There are humanitarian interventions, but they are not coordinated.”

He added “all these efforts must be channelized into one coordinated humanitarian intervention."

Konaté also said “in six weeks the difference will be seen.”

The Security Council set up the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) over a year ago to support the West African country's recovery from a coup and the occupation of its north by Islamist fundamentalists, its transition back to stability and democratic governance, and the promotion of human rights and provision of humanitarian aid.
